My gaze slipped down to his left bicep, where, even in

the dim light, I could read the swirly Gothic letters that

spelled out a word: Mark

Instantly, the heavy fog of inebriation and lust lifted. I

blinked, reading it over again just to be sure. Hesitantly, I

ran my hand over Dylan’s skin. The letters felt slightly

raised, a little rough. Like a new tattoo, done not more than

a few weeks ago.

Dylan paused. “What are you doing?”

He sat up. I propped myself up on my elbow.

“Does that say….”

“Mark,” Dylan finished. “Yes, that’s what it says.”

“So your ex-singer….”

“Was my ex-boyfriend. Yes. Is that a problem?”

I gaped at him. “No,” I said, even though I knew it was a

blatant lie. “Why….”

I couldn’t quite verbalize all the questions that buzzed in

my head. Why do you have a tattoo of your ex-boyfriend’s

name? Okay, some people got tats of boyfriends’ names, but

usually not exes. And why is it fresh? Just how long ago did

you break up? And finally…. That last question I couldn’t

even put into words in my mind: Am I just your rebound…

lover… fuck… thing?

“Mark and I founded Midnight Blue. It was— is—our

band. I have the right to get a tattoo of his name.” Dylan

climbed off me and stood up, picking up his T-shirt.

“I see.” I could barely breathe. I suppose that answers

pretty much all of my questions, I thought. I’m the rebound

fuck and the rebound vocalist. The replacement goldfish.

My eyes stung. I sat up and started to get dressed too.

“I’ll be going,” I muttered, without looking up at him. If he

noticed I was close to tears, it would be by far the most

humiliating thing about all this.

Dylan sighed. “Tyler, wait….”
